This week, we announced that xpedx earned the ENERGY STAR at our facilities in Columbia, S.C. and Charlotte, N.C. The facilities are our third and fourth locations to earn the ENERGY STAR this year. As a result, we are more than halfway to our 2013 goal to earn the ENERGY STAR at seven facilities. The announcement gave me an opportunity to talk with our Charlotte facility manager, Bill Gravely, and discuss how our team members have risen to the challenge to earn the ENERGY STAR and achieve our other sustainability goals.
Bill told me how our sustainability goals have inspired everyone to rally behind our environmental efforts. He spoke about how our team members in Charlotte made a conscious effort to be more environmentally friendly by doing such things as turning off unnecessary lights and planting trees and gardens on the Charlotte grounds. This positive reaction and buy-in from our colleagues is a critical step toward ensuring that we will continue to offer our customers the sustainable solutions that they have come to expect.
Our team members in Charlotte were not the only ones to support our sustainability efforts. Our colleagues in Columbia also rose to the challenge to earn the ENERGY STAR designation. Just look at this picture of Christina Bartling, a Columbia team member, happily posing with our newest ENERGY STAR decal.
The ENERGY STAR designation is given to buildings scoring in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency, based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s energy performance rating system. xpedx has now earned this designation at 24 facilities since 2011.
I look forward to more of these announcements, as we continue to make progress toward our 2013 sustainability goals.
