Thanks to Celestica for Recognizing xpedx Denver

By: Tuesday, May 22, 2012

I’m sending a big thank you out to Celestica Inc., a customer of our Denver distribution center. Celestica is a global leader in the delivery of end-to-end product lifecycle solutions, and recently recognized xpedx Denver during its 2011 Total Cost of Ownership (TCOOTM) Supplier Awards.

The award honors suppliers who support Celestica’s innovative approach to supply chain management and provide the best TCOO performance to Celestica and its customers by demonstrating excellence in quality, delivery, technology, service, pricing and flexibility.

Kudos go out to Eileen Druggish – an xpedx sales representative in Denver – and a big cast of supporting characters who get the job done for Celestica. The company has now recognized xpedx’s contribution for three years in a row, citing our ability to help them drive speed, flexibility and responsiveness through their supply chain.

Considering Celestica has a global network of more than 3,000 suppliers – we are more than honored to be among their top performers!

Connecting Sustainable Package Design, Efficiency and Cost Savings

By: Monday, May 21, 2012

Last year we produced this video to illustrate how package design affects every aspect of the packaging supply chain. From graphic and structural design through production, kitting and fulfillment, the video helps manufacturers understand how the right design leads to a total packaging solution, improving sustainability, creating efficiencies as well as impressive cost savings along the way.

Kevin Southwick runs an xpedx Package Design & Engineering Center that's located near Pittsburgh and services the surrounding metro markets. It's one of ten across a national network of design centers operated by xpedx.

It's a big subject so the video is almost five minutes long, but if you scroll ahead to 3:56 Kevin explains how thinking about sustainability at the design stage -- and incorporating simple changes -- can generate substantial total savings.

If you have anything to do with your company's packaging then the video is worth a watch for sure. Also, here's a map of xpedx's package design network. You can learn about our centers, and reach Kevin through the Packaging Solutions section on xpedx.com.

'Driving' CSR - xpedx is Committed to Safety

By: Monday, April 23, 2012

Thanks to Dana McEwan -- a cycling commuter in Portland, Maine -- for taking time to thank our drivers in her town for their safe and courteous practices.

Safety is a top prioritiy at xpedx - in our facilities, at our customers' businesses, and especially on the streets!

Dana shared this post on xpedx.com last week:

I often commute by bike along Middle Road in Falmouth. I want to commend your drivers on being very courteous when passing me on the road. As you know, it's not a very wide road. I find your drivers go slowly (I assume the speed limit) and give me ample room when passing. It's refreshing to have such thoughtful drivers on the road. I hope they have this same mentality when driving their own vehicles on personal time when passing a cyclist.

Thank you!
Dana McEwan, Portland, Maine

And of course, a big thanks to every xpedx driver for representating our business so well!

IP Foundation - Hard at work in our communities!

By: Friday, April 20, 2012

Earlier this year the IP Foundation donated $4,000 to the Cincinnati-based non-profit Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.  The organization was selected to receive funding not only because it fills an important need in the community, but also because xpedx team member, Maria Mundy, generously donates her time to the cause.

Yogi Weis, program director, expressed her gratitude in this recent letter and shared this photo of Mary Ellen, one of many Cincinnati seniors who benefit greatly from the Little Brothers' mission.

April 18

Dear Maria,

Thank you for volunteering on Easter and thank you for being instrumental in Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly recently receiving the $4000 grant.  I was thinking about how much the grant was needed and how helpful the funding was for Easter.

On Easter Sunday we visited 125 homebound elderly taking them each a homemade Easter dinner with all the trimmings complete with a potted plant. In addition to these visits we also visited 46 elders in local nursing homes and 240 elders in three nursing homes in Price Hill, Batavia and Pleasant Ridge. Today we received a letter from the director of the nursing home in Pleasant Ridge who stated “Although some residents do have the love of family on the outside and the care of professionals on the inside things can be lonely. To know that those otherwise unknown to you care means a lot”.

Because of the support of IP we are able to befriend those elderly who do experience loneliness and remind them that they are loved.

We are preparing now for our Senior Prom which will be attended by over 200 elderly and volunteers and gearing up for our Summer Outings where 195 elders will be invited to select two out of twelve events to attend.  The funding from IP will fund our outings to the Freedom Center and our movie and lunch outing. Thank you.

- Yogi Wess, Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly

xpedx would like to add our thanks for Maria's excellent work in the community. Thank you Maria!

Funding Available to Eligible Non-Profits Through The IP Foundation

By: Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Does your organization need funding? xpedx and International Paper may be able to help. We conduct most of our philanthropic activities through the International Paper Foundation, which was established nearly 60 years ago. Over the years we've helped fund thousands of programs that promote environmental education and literacy, in addition to providing for the short-term, critical civic needs within the communities where we operate.

Not everyone is eligible for an IP Foundation grant. Nonprofit charitable organizations classified under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. IRS Code, as well as certain municipal, county, state and federal entities are eligible, like school districts, police and fire departments. The IP Foundation also supports those organizations where our employees actively volunteer.

If it sounds like your organization could be a fit for our funding programs, please visit us online to review the grant application guidelines. Grants are reviewed and awarded quarterly.

Just go to InternationalPaper.com and remember the xpedx invitation code: 'xpedxgives.'

How Do You Spell Green? Nurture Environmental Literacy with Cash

By: Wednesday, February 29, 2012

xpedx and the International Paper Foundation put their money where their mouth is. Environmental education is one of our core values and we show it with financial support for non-profits committed to teaching about important environmental issues.

In February, through the IP Foundation, xpedx employees presented $14,000 in grants to the following six non-profits in support of their environmental programs:

  • Assateague Coastal Trust, Inc., Berlin, Md., awarded funds to help finance its family-based environmental education program of the Assateague Coastal Trust. ($2,500)
  • Montana Vista Elementary School, El Paso, Texas, awarded funds to help purchase materials to further develop gardens for an outdoor classroom. ($1,500)
  • National Aquarium, Baltimore, Md., awarded funds to help finance The Atlantic White Cedar Habitat Project at Nassawango Creek Reserve. ($2,000)
  • Rocky Mountain Nature Association, Estes Park, Colo., awarded funds to allow young adults to complete conservation work in Rocky Mountain National Park. ($3,000)
  • South Central Industries, Shawnee, Okla., awarded funds to help finance a paper recycling station for Shawnee, Oklahoma and the surrounding areas. ($2,500)
  • The Rotary Club of Sparks Nevada, Sparks, Nev., awarded funds to help finance the Kids’ Free Fishing Day, which promotes wildlife education. ($2,500)

This week, I received a letter from Georgette Frederick, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations. She writes:

"This project will engage both local citizens and students in restoration of the stream corrider at their local park. This cleanup and planting event will lead to improved environmental and aesthetic quality of this urban park, and ultimately to its greater usage. We are most grateful to your organization for supporting this worthwhile program...Again, please accept our sincere thanks."

The real thanks go out to you, Georgette, and the National Aquarium for being good stewards of Baltimore's natural resources. Best of luck to your team and your project!

So proud to work for xpedx

By: Monday, February 27, 2012

I am so proud to work for a business that is focused on giving back to the communities where we operate. In February, representatives from six Greater Cincinnati non-profits and schools visited xpedx and International Paper's campus in Loveland, Ohio. They came to receive grants on behalf of their organizations totaling $20,000. The money will support a great variety of programs helping people from Covington, Ky., to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Across the country we gave even more -- $75,000 in all to more than 20 worthy organizations.

Funding came from the International Paper Foundation whose primary focus is on environmental education and literacy. The IP Foundation also provides short term, critical financial support in the communities where IP and xpedx employees work, live and actively volunteer.

Here are the organizations we helped -- just in Greater Cincinnati:

  • Dress for Success Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, awarded funds to help cover expenses related to engaging women in the work force. ($3,000)
  • Eastway Corporation, Dayton, Ohio, awarded funds for educational software systems, housing services, case management and forensic psychiatry programs. ($3,500)
  • Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, Cincinnati, Ohio, awarded funds to help finance events for nursing home residents. ($4,000)
  • Ninth District School, Covington, Ky., awarded funds to help finance its Earth Day Every Day Environmental Education Project. (Grant amount - $3,000)
  • SIDS Network of Ohio, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, awarded funds to help provide safe sleep t-shirts to newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. ($4,823)
  • The Matthew Kelly Foundation, Cincinnati, Ohio, awarded funds to help finance the Why Am I Here initiative, which teaches children the skill of decision-making. ($2,000)

You can learn more and complete a grant application online. Grants are awarded quarterly.
